Wolf Brother
2004
The first volume of Michelle Paver’s celebrated series, Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.
Wolf Brother is the tale of a Neolithic boy left alone in the forest, who meets an orphaned wolf cub. The relationship between boy and wolf is the heart of the series, which takes place in a dark and threatening world of tribes and spirits, 6000 years ago.
The idea of cave paintings in flickering firelight was so powerful and evocative, and the concept for the whole series was to try to recreate an image that could have been made by someone at that time.
I was thrilled to get to do these covers – design and illustration and typography for six beautiful, moving and exciting stories. One of the best jobs I ever had.
The book – and the series – was a massive success, with a huge fanbase – I have met people with the Boy/Wolf icon tattooed on their skin!
The book was originally published in 2004 by Orion Books. In 2020, to tie in with the release of three new stories in the series, Hachette asked me to revise the covers. This is the 2020 version, I had always been a bit unhappy with the figures and the letterforms for the first book, so I was happy to get a chance to fix them.
